Educational workshops “Data security in a modern company” organized by IBM in collaboration with CC S4S Team at Wroclaw University of Economics

On 25-26 November 2015 at the University of Economics in Wroclaw took place a unique educational workshops for students “Data security in the modern enterprise,” which was organized by the Department of Resiliency Services from IBM in collaboration with the CC ITSE Team. During two four-hour meetings, students explored the possibilities of popular information technology, familiarized with the big corporation which is IBM and demonstrated their creativity and commitment to solving IT tasks.

The workshops objectives were:

• familiarize students with the new IBM Strategy regarding Cloud, Analytics, Mobile, Social, Security. Inform about New approach to IT Services and Data Analytics Challenges, with info related to Cognitive Analysis.
• present the principles and working IT tools in the IBM Resiliency Services Department,
• introduction of company data recovery software and directions for its use.
  The scope of the workshops:

The workshops were directly related to new scenarios in IT Services, data analytic enterprises and operation of the IBM Resiliency Services Department.

The first part of the workshops was an introduction and will cover the following topics:

1. IBM Strategy related to Cloud, Analysis, Mobile, Social and Security have a big transformation on the way business is managed, plus an overview on Cognitive Systems.
2. Department Structure: how we are organized and why – local and global
3. Virtualized Server Recovery, overview about disaster recovery solution used by Resiliency Services in IBM and at today operative in 17 countries worldwide.

The main part of the workshops was purely practical and based on case studies. The detailed scope covers the following topics:

1. Quick recap on ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library).
2. Change Management overview from practices – case study.
3. Incident Management – case study.
4. Problem Management – case study.
5. Compliance: Ticketing tool.
6. Culture in our business.

The consortium meeting of Act-Go Gate project partners in Hamburg

On 4 and 5 August in Hamburg (Germany) took place the second consortium meeting regarding the project called Active Retiree and Golden Workers Gate (Act-Go Gate). The meeting was attended by representatives of all the project members i.e.: University of St. Gallen, Wroclaw University of Economics, Entwicklungszentrum Gut altwerden GmbH, Business Engineering Institute St. Gallen AG, Alsterdorf Service Center GmbH, Clavis IT and Benevol.

Our University was represented by Robert Kutera, business analyst in project team. The meeting consisted of two days discussions and presentations concerning the Act-Go Gate project.

On the first day of meeting organizational issues and overall project status were discussed. The main goal of the first day of the meeting was presentations of each module: “Serve the Community”, “Flexible Occupation” and “Get involved with Organizations”, where current status and further expectations were discussed, with an emphasis on user requirements identification and specification.

At the beginning of the second day took part the discussion about reporting structure and requirements. The most important part of the second day was the discussion on project plan for next six months. As a result a detailed timesheet was prepared, that includes the most important overall project issues: the development of business models and system architecture and detailed tasks for each module.

Next project meeting will be held on 21. and 22. January 2016 in Weil der Stadt (Germany).

The inception of Competence Center IT in Service Economy (CC ITSE)

On 15 July was created the Competence Centre as a part of ”Institute of Highway Technology and Innovation” consortium, whose member since 29 September 2014 is Wroclaw University of Economics.

The Center under the name Competence Center IT in Service Economy (CC ITSE) – set up within the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) thematic area – will be supervised by Professor. Leszek A. Maciaszek.

The thesis defense of students of the Cyber Security Management postgraduate studies

The thesis defense of students of the Cyber Security Management postgraduate studies, organized by the Institute of Business Informatics and IBM took place on 29-th of March.The examination committee consisted of 4 persons: Prof. Leszek Maciaszek (Academic supervisor of the studies), Dr. Maja Leszczyńska (the manager of the studies), Dr. Artur Rot (the tutor of the thesis) and IBM representative – Mr. Damian Starościc (IBM Security Operations Centre Manager).The defense of postgraduate thesis was inaugurated by Professor Josef Pieprzyk from Queensland University of Technology in Australia, who gave very interesting guest lecture “Cryptography Quo Vadis?”. On behalf of the organizers we would like to thank the team of teachers, both cyber-security practitioners, including many employees from IBM, as well as outstanding professors from national and foreign universities.

Workshops in Wroclaw with our partners from St. Gallen and Leipzig

At the beginning of March the CC S4S team hosted in Wroclaw the representatives of the University of St. Gallen and the University of Leipzig, Our teams have been working together for several years in the context of joint research projects.

During 3-days workshop members of all teams gave speeches and discussed in particular about the Independent Living project, design, development and improvement of the service management platform Amiona, work on the ActGo-Gate project as well as new projects/pilots opportunities.

The honoris causa doctorate for prof. Hubert Österle

On the 5th of March 2015 there was a feast of Wroclaw University of Economics. The main event of the ceremony was to confer the honorary honoris causa doctorate of the University of Economics in Wroclaw to the prof. Hubert Österle from the University of St. Gallen. The promoter of the honorary doctorate was prof. Bogdan Franczyk. The ceremony was attended by representatives of Lower Silesia, authorities of Wroclaw, authorities of numerous polish universities as well as invited guests from universities in Germany and Switzerland.

An important element of prof. H. Österle activity is its cooperation with the Business Informatics Institute of Wroclaw University of Economics. This cooperation includes, inter alia research and development in the Independent Living project. The result of this work is IT platform “Appointment Coordination Service” used to coordinate and manage the ordering and electronic distribution of broadly defined services.

Due to initiatives and activities of the professor Österle, among others, ActGo-Gate project (Active Retiree and Golden Workers Gate) was acquired. This project has been currently fulfilling by consortium of partners from Switzerland, Germany and Poland. Obtained funding for the project is a total of over 1,6 mill Euro, of which the sum of 375 thousand Euro fell our University. The consortium plans are further grants and development projects in collaboration with several institutions and organizations from Lower Silesia.

The first working meeting of Act-Go Gate project partners in St. Gallen

At the beginning of February took place the first working meeting regarding the project called Active Retiree and Golden Workers Gate (Act-Go Gate). The meeting was attended by representatives of all the project consortium members i.e.: University of St. Gallen, Wroclaw University of Economics, Entwicklungszentrum Gut altwerden GmbH, Business Engineering Institute St. Gallen AG, Alsterdorf Service Center GmbH, Clavis IT and Benevol.

Our University was represented by Wieslawa Gryncewicz from CC S4S team. The meeting consisted of two days discussions and presentations concerning the Act-Go Gate project.

The main goal of the first day meeting was detailed partner discussions on the aims and objectives of the project, fit with Ambient Assisted Living Joint Programme (AAL JP) objectives and partner priorities. During this day the project aim and objective were devised as well as the clarification of organizational issues was specified.

At the beginning of the second day took part the discussion about three planned pilots, interest for partners and (technical) feasibility. This resulted into amended/improved all partners’ agreed understanding and linking objectives for the project pilots.

Following the clarifications and agreement of the aims and objectives of the pilots, the final session of the second day meeting identified partner resources required and the actions required by partners to proceed, resulting in a project plan for the next 6 month.

Meeting with representatives of the Wroclaw Universities Consortium

On 5^th of December members of the CC S4S team (Wieslawa Gryncewicz, Maja Leszczyńska and Monika Sitarska) held consultations with representatives of the Wroclaw Universities Consortium.

The meeting concerned joint research projects and grants in the area of support for the elderly people. The meeting was also attended by Professor Jerzy Niemczyk – the Director of the Office of Science and Cooperation with the EU Economy in Wroclaw and Anna Pluta – the European Projects Manager of the EU in Wroclaw
